Reminder: Daylight Saving Time!

Don't forget to set your clocks one hour ahead before you go to sleep on Saturday!

Spelling & grammar:

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.
Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Similar examples would be dog walking time or book reading time. Since saving is a verb describing a single type of activity, the form is singular.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue, and Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries. Part of the confusion is because the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, but it is not as politically desirable. the British Time (Extra Daylight) Bill was introduced by John Butterfill, attempting the impossible -- to legislate extra daylight. The bill did not pass.

When in the morning?

In the U.S., clocks change at 2 am local time. In Spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 am to 3 am; in Fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 am to 1 am. In the EU, clocks change at 1 am Universal Time. In Spring, clocks spring forward from 12:59 am to 2 am; in Fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 am to 1 am.

Nationwide, U.S. restaurants and bars have varied closing policies. In many states, liquor cannot be served after 2 a.m. But at 2 a.m. in the Fall, the time switches back one hour. So, can they serve for that additional hour in October? The official answer is that the bars do not close at 2 a.m. but actually at 1:59 a.m. So, they are already closed when the time changes from Daylight Saving Time into Standard Time. In practice however, many establishments stay open an extra hour in the Fall.

In the U.S., the changeover time was chosen to be 2 am, when most people are at home and, originally, the time when the fewest trains were running. This is practical and minimizes disruption. It is late enough to minimally affect bars and restaurants, and prevent the day from switching to yesterday (which would be confusing). It is early enough that the entire continental U.S. has switched by daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift workers and early churchgoers (particularly on Easter).

Funny story about Daylight Saving Time:
Daylight Saving is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, most of the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and the state of Arizona (not the Navajo Indian Reservation, which does observe). Derek, being being from Hawaii, was oblivious to Daylight Saving so when it was that time to change our clocks, he totally thought we were pulling his leg. Hahaha!

When I was in grade school my nose used to bleed a lot. I got a bloody nose at least once or twice a day. So it would be normal for me to have tissue stuck up one of my nostrils. Being the cool older sister that I am, my sister, Carol, wanted to be just like me. So one day when Carol was about 5 years old, she had the brilliant idea of copying me and shoved pieces of cotton up her nose...so high up in her nose that no one could see the cotton. So days went by, maybe even weeks, during which no one knew she had cotton up her nose. Until one day when we were swimming in my cousin's pool that we noticed a disgusting stench. It was coming from Carol! But we couldn't figure out what was creating the awful smell. My mom started sniffing every part of my sister's body until she finally reached the nose...ding ding ding! My mom took Carol to the doctor and he had to use a long metal pokey thing to get all the cotton out. Oh man, it was gross...the cotton was all brown and slimey! That's my sister~

Yesterday I was in the elevator going up to my apartment and there was this really nerdy looking asian guy that I've never seen before in the elevator with this huge suitcase. As soon as I step in the elevator he starts interrogating me:

Nerd: Are you just getting back from work?
Me: Yup.
Nerd: Where do you work?
Me: Oakland.
Nerd: What do you do?
Me: I work for Kaiser Permanente
Nerd: Do you like your job?"
Me: It's ok
Nerd: As you can see, I'm moving.
Me: (I nod my head)
Nerd: How long have you lived here for?
Me: Not too long
Nerd: Which apartment do you live in?

Luckily, the elevator door opened right when he asked this question and I just darted out the door. And keep in mind that I only live on the 2nd floor so he asked me all these questions in a matter of less than a minute. Weirdo.

We had a fire drill at work today. It was pretty lame. I don't know if the fire deparment normally comes to building fire drills but the Oakland Fire Department was there. I've always thought that firefighters were generally good looking. However, the Oakland Fire Department completely defies that generalization. There were 4 firefighters there and not one of them was remotely good looking. Maybe since it was just a drill they sent the default fire station to save the real firefighters that are good looking for something big.

Headaches and coughing don't go well together. I've been coughing for the past two weeks now and I've had this incessant headache for about a week. So everytime I cough I feel like someone just punched me in the head. Cough...ow...cough...ow...cough...ow. I try to surpress my coughs but it's hard...one time I felt a cough coming on so I took a big gulp of water. Yea, I ended up spraying the water all over myself. Yuck.

I like to have options. I get bored with eating just one thing. That's why I like buffets...there are so many choices! This morning I had my own little breakfast buffet. I bought a wide variety of Luna Bars to eat for breakfast but I couldn't decide on which flavor to eat. So I just ate 1/4 of the 4 bars that I had. Good stuff. But now I have all these partially opened Luna Bars in my desk.
